Packing
• When packing boxes, be sure to use the correct size. Large boxes are best for light items, and smaller boxes for heavier belongings.
• If you are packing small items, try to fill the box completely, so that it does not collapse. If you have extra space, try filling it with crumpled newspaper.
• Be sure to carefully wrap all fragile items in paper or bubble wrap.
• Use high quality packing tape to seal all boxes.
• If you are storing clothes, you may want to use wardrobe or clothes boxes. This way you can place your clothing on hangers, which will help them to retain their shape.
• It is important to label all your boxes clearly. Make sure to label them on more than one side so that you will be able to identify them when stacked in your self storage unit. Don’t forget to write “Fragile” on any boxes with breakable items.
• Protect your wood furniture by spraying it with furniture spray before moving it into your self storage unit.
• Metal objects should be treated with a rust protector to keep them in good condition while in storage.
• If you are storing equipment that contains gas or oil, such as a lawnmower or leaf blower, make sure to remove the liquid before storing. See your owner’s manual for safe removal.
• Take pictures of the items you will be storing before packing them. Make an estimate of their replacement value for insurance purposes.
Storage
• When stacking boxes, make sure to place the heaviest boxes on the bottom to avoid damaging lighter items.
• Create more space by storing small items inside larger, hollow items, such as drawers refrigerators and trash cans.
• If you are storing a mattress, make sure to cover it with plastic and place on a level surface.
• When storing a refrigerator, be sure to leave the door slightly open in order to prevent mold and mildew.
• Make sure to leave a space between your items and the wall to ensure proper ventilation.
• Remember to create aisles between stacks of belongings so you can easily move through your self storage unit.
• Try to decide beforehand what items you will need to access often, and keep those in the front of your self storage unit.
• You may want to draw a simple map to remind you where various items are stored. This is especially helpful if you rent a larger unit.
• Do not store anything combustible, hazardous or perishable. Make sure all of the items in your self storage unit comply with the Store It Rental Agreement.
• Be sure to use a high quality lock. You can purchase this at the Store It retail area.
